BURNLEY defender Ben Mee insists he relishes the physical top flight contests as he prepares to do battle with the Premier League’s top scorer this weekend.

Mee impressed against Middlesbrough’s Rudy Gestede last time out as he helped the Clarets to a ninth clean sheet of the campaign and the 27-year-old is eager to repeat the trick against Everton’s 23-goal striker Romelu Lukaku this weekend.

“He’s a top player and a top goalscorer so we’ll have to try and keep him quiet,” Mee said of the challenge facing him and his teammates.

“I’m sure we’ll do that because we’ve come up against him before and we’ve come up against many strikers that are in his category and in his league so it’ll be a good challenge for us.

“It’s funny because you see the size of me but I like to get involved and mix it a little bit with the taller lads. It’s part of the game and they try to find a way to gain the advantage. Fortunately it doesn’t always work out like that which is nice.

“You’ve got to be clever against big lads and I’ve learned more and more as I’ve played the game and got that experience. You get a knack for doing things like that.”

Mee’s impressive performance at Boro may well have caught the eye of watching England manager Gareth Southgate and the former Manchester City youngster admits following his teammates Tom Heaton and Michael Keane into the Three Lions squad is a realistic aim.

“It’s 100 per cent the dream,” said Mee of earning an England call up. “It’s definitely the ambition, something that I want, and I’m working towards that. “This season has helped me so far and I want to keep proving myself and show people what I can do.

“I’m enjoying myself, I’m enjoying playing in this team and I just want to play well for the team and see what happens. Clean sheets will help and it’s always nice to get them.

“You never know. It’s something I want and I’m driving towards it. If I keep playing well then hopefully it might happen.”

Mee and Burnley travel to Everton on Saturday looking to build on what the defender felt was a good point at the Riverside Stadium.

“It’s a valuable point in a game that could have gone either way,” said Mee of the Teesside stalemate.

“Both teams had good chances and it keeps us ticking over. The results down there went our way as well so it’s another point away from that lot.

“They’ve got a tough run in and being at home they obviously wanted to win. We went out with the mentality that we wanted the three points as well because it’d be nice for our fans to see us get three points on the road.

“This week we’ve got four points out of six from the two games so we’re not on a bad run now. We’ll keep working hard towards the last six games now.”
